中文摘要: 全球历史海洋热含量变化,是气候变化的一个重要指标,是全球变化研究的一个重要的基础性问题。然而对其进行准确估计仍然是一个难题,其中一个原因是过去海洋次表层温度观测数据空间覆盖不足。这使得在计算热含量时需要使用某种Mapping方法“猜测”无观测区域的热含量,但不同的Mapping方案得到的热含量估计差异很大。因而本项目的首要目标是评估目前已有的多种Mapping方案的优劣:由于无法对历史海洋进行重新观测,如何构造一个具有完整全球覆盖的热含量“真值场”是进行评估的关键。进而,我们将提出一种新的Mapping方案,该方案将使用多个CMIP5模式历史运行结果构建背景协方差并提供初始场,利用集合平方根滤波方法同化框架结合模式与观测数据,得到历史(1940-2013)海洋上层(0-700m)热含量及其不确定性的最优估计。

英文摘要: Global Ocean heat content (OHC) change is a key climate indicator, so estimation on historical OHC change is one of the fundamental problems in climate science studies. However, there are large uncertainties in OHC estimates, one of which originates from the insufficiency of the spatial coverage of in situ temperature observations. That’s why Mapping method is always required to “guess” the OHC in data gaps. Studies showed that the choice of different mapping methods leads to a substantial difference in OHC calculation. Therefore, our primary task in this project is to investigate the performance of the existing Mapping methods. Altimetry sea level data and Grace ocean mass data are combined to provide an OHC truth field with global coverage. Furthermore, a new Mapping method will be proposed based on Ensemble Square Root Filter (EnSRF) scheme by using the outputs of CMIP5 historical run, which provides the proper estimation of background error covariance and “first guess” field. Based on this new Mapping method and recent progresses in OHC studies, an updated estimate on historical (1940-2014) upper (0-700m) OHC change will be presented.
