The stoichiometry of seston is highly flexible when facing diverse light and nutrient supply. zooplankton stoichiometry, however, is rather homeostatic. Thus, the stoichiometric mismatch between food supply and zooplankton demand may impose negative effects on the ecological efficiency of zooplankton and on the structural stability of pelagic food webs in lakes. In this project enclosure experiments will be performed with differing light and nutrient supply. The impacts of food quality among contrasting treaments on zooplankton community structure will be assessed, and how the mismatch degree responses to the light and nutrient supply will be clarified. Meanwhile, an incubation experiment will be set up to explore how the grazing pressure of mesozooplankton on phytoplankton is regulated by the mismatch degree. Also, the influences of the mismatch degree on the energy transfer efficiency between phyto- and zoo-plankton will be studied. The elucidation of these relationships will not only improve our understanding of the zooplankton community dynamics along the environmental gradients, but also enhance our comprehension of the energy transfer and material cycling in pelagic food webs.
