Cotton is the most important fiber crop and is a mainstay of economy in China. Cotton fibers are extensively used in textile industry. NAC and KNOX transcription factors may play important roles in plant secondary cell wall development. We identified NAC1, NAC2, KNL1 and other transcription factors in cotton, and demonstrated they are specifically or prodominantly expressed in cotton fibers.Furthermore, KNL1 expression is regulated directly by NAC1 in cotton fibers. Based on our previous research progresses, this project plan to investigate the roles of cotton fiber-specific NAC1/2 and NAC1-controlled KNL1 and other transcription factors in secondary cell wall formation and modification of fiber cells. We will study how these transcription factors modulate the proteins involved in cell wall biosynthesis, and interacted with some transcription factors, so that we can elucidate the regulation mechanism of cotton fiber cell wall development. This study will provide new scientific data in the cell wall biosynthesis of cotton fibers for understanding molecular mechanism of cotton fiber development, and for molecular breeding of fiber quality improvement.
