The feeding relationship between the animals and plants is one of the most important parts of diffuse coevolution theory. Many ecologist recognized that plants secondary compounds affected the feeding behaviors of animals, but there are a few studies involved in the usage and adaptation mechanism of animals to secondary compounds.Polyphenols is one kind of important secondary compounds in plants. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the effects of polyphenols on the feeding behaviors of two mammals inhabiting in alpine meadow ecosystem, plateau pikas (Ochtona curzoniae) and root voles (Mictotus oeconomus), and to explore the adaptation and usage strategy of these animals to polyphenols. So, it is planed to observer the food selection of two animals, the contents of polyphenols and activity of key synthesis enzyme of polyphenols in the food plants of two animals in different seasons, to assay the detoxification of polyphenols by CYP450 in liver microsomes of animals, and the decomposition and usage of polyphenols by bacteria in intestine by using gene chip technology and other advanced methods in ecology, ethology, physiology and pharmacology. The study result will be helpful to elucidate the coevolution mechanism of the animals and plants in alpine meadow ecosystem, be benefit to control the amounts of pes
