Anther cell differentiation in flowering plants has been shown to be essential for male fertility, as well as the ability to produce normal seeds. Some receptor-like kinases have been proven to be important in cell differentiation, development and function maintenance during early stages of anther development. EMS1/EXS gene encodes a receptor-like kinase, and plays critical roles in anther cell fate determination. The ems1 mutant anthers lack the tapetum but produce more microsporocytes. Autophosphorylation of protein kinases and reversible protein phosphorylation triggered by protein kinases are important post-translational modification in living cells and primarily serve regulatory purposes. However, little information is available regarding regulation by protein phosphorylation during anther development. Based on the knowledge of anther cell differentiation during early stages of anther development,we will take advantages of genetics and proteomics techniques, to study the regulatory mechanism of the receptor-like kinase EMS1 during anther cell differentiation and development.
