Quantification of the present potential of mangrove soil as sources or sinks for atmospheric greenhouse gas, and the role of mangrove ecosystems in mediating the greenhouse effect, are important and required for the national greenhouse inventory of coastal wetlands. However, the atmospheric greenhouse gas fluxes are poorly characterized in the mangrove wetlands, and the research that simultaneously studies the three gases (CO2, CH4 and N2O) is still limited, leading to an insufficiency acknowledge of the contribution of mangrove ecosystems to global warming. The present study thus aims to quantify the greenhouse gases emissions from estuarine mangrove, andd evaluate the effects of environmental characteristics on greenhouse gases emissions as well as the role of mangrove ecosystem in mediating the greenhouse effect. In a Kandel candel mangrove in Jiulongjiang Estuary, Fujian, field-measurement based studies will be carried out, including (1) investigating the seasonal and spatial variations of greenhouse gas fluxes from mangrove soil and quantifying their annual emissions; (2) measuring the soil chemical and physical characteristics and checking their relationship with gases fluxes; and (3) estimating the absorption of CO2 by mangrove vegetation through measuring the net primary production of mangrove.
