The atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition and precipitation changes have significantly altered terrestrial ecosystem carbon and nitrogen cycles. In this project, we will investigate the response of litter decomposition processes to N deposition and precipitation changes in a Canopy Addition of Nitrogen and Water Experiment (CANWE) in subtropical forest. We plan to measure the changes of litter quantity, quality and decomposition rate under different N deposition and precipitation treatments, and monitor the response of soil surface C fractions, soil microbial composition and soil enzymes to N depostion and precipitation changes. We focus our objectives on the followings: 1)to clarify the relationships between litter quality and decomposition rate, and between soil organic carbon accumulation and litter decomposition; 2)to explore the function of soil microorganisms and soil enzymes in litter decomposition processes under the canopy N deposition and precipitation change; 3) to assess the different effects of canopy and understory stimulated nitrogen deposition on litter decomposition. Results from this study will theoretically provide new understanding on the responses of litter decomposition and carbon cycling to canopy N deposition and precipitation change in subtropical forests, and contribute useful information
