The current magnetotelluric (MT) data show that there are a lot of high conductivity anomalies in the middle-deep crust. These high conductivity anomalies cannot be interpretated by the normal crustal rocks. There are always some seismic scatterers in these regions and these regions are also characterized by low seismic wave velocity. Therefore, brine-bearing aqueous fluid is one of the best candidates. It's necessary to support this by electrical conductivity experiments of the brine-bearing rocks under high pressure and high temperature. This project aims to measure the electrical conductivity of three major minerals (plagioclase, clinopyroxene, and orthopyroxene) in the crust as functions of water content and NaCl concentration under 1 GPa and 400-1200 K. Based on the experimental results,we can constrain the origin of the high conductivity anomalies in the crust and build a 1-D conductivity-depth profile in the mid-lower crust.
