Self-sustained waves propagating through excitable media play very important role in diverse physical, chemical and biological processes. These studies have potential applications in cardiology since self-sustained wave activity plays an essential role in cardiac arrhythmias. Spiral waves are among the most prominent examples of self-organized pattern in excitable media. They have been found in chemical waves in reaction-diffusion system, self-organizing structures in emplastic mycete colony, electrical waves in cardiac muscle, and Ca+2 waves in oocyte. In this proposal, the dynamics and control of spiral waves will be investigated. The main content is divided into the following three aspects: (1) Study of the symmetry breaking in spiral turbulence induced by circularly polarized electric fields. (2) Study of the mechanism for inwardly rotating spirals in non-uniform excitable media. (3) Study of the spiral drift under external fields in the strongly excitable limit, including numerical simulation and theoretical analysis. This proposal will contribute to the nature of the in-depth understanding of the dynamics of spiral waves and provide useful guidance in the relevant field of application of spiral waves.
