Natural and anthropogenic aerosols have a very complex impact on terrestrial ecosystem carbon cycle. Many recent studies show that neglecting diffuse radiation would lead to great uncertainty in estimating terrestrial ecosystem carbon flux. However, few attempts have been made to study the impact of aerosol light scattering effect on terrestrial ecosystem carbon flux at global scale. Several studies, confined by the quality of optical properties on aerosols and cloud used and methodologies adopted, still show questionable results. This study attempts to investigate the impact of aerosol light scattering effect on global terrestrial ecosystem carbon flux, and to explore the response of terrestrial ecosystem productivity and carbon budget to anthropogenic aerosols in China, by using a modeling framework. It will include a synergy of ground observations, satellite retrievals and model simulation of aerosol optical properties, radiative transfer calculations of diffuse radiation and BEPS ecosystem process model simulations. The findings of this study will provide guidance and insight for a better estimate of terrestrial ecosystem carbon flux, the evaluation of the impact of human activities on the productivity of terrestrial ecosystem and the policy making on emission reduction strategy.
