Dietary factors are associated with unfavorable blood pressure (BP) levels, but what macronutrients/micronutrients/food/dietary pattern that could cause increased BP levels remain unclear, and the pathways of how dietary factors affecting BP are still unknown. A cohort study in three Chinese populations (North: Beijing, Shanxi; South: Guangxi) in the International Collaborative Study of Macronutrients, Micronutrients and Blood Pressure Study (INTERMAP) is proposed here to elucidate the causal relationship between dietary intake and blood pressure. Metabolomics approach will be used in this study to provide more objective measurement to dietary intake, to analyze food intake and its metabolites in relations to BP and to help achieve great understanding of etiopathogenetic pathways (mechanisms) whereby dietary factors affect BP in the human species. Data collection will include standardized BP measurement (4 times), height, weight and waist circumference measurement (2 times), 24 hour dietary recall collection (2 times), 24 hour urine collection (2 times), fast blood sample collection and electrocardiogram (1 time each), level of physical activity and other potential confounding factors by questionnaire, information of fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular events. Based on these data collections, the prospective relationship of dietary factors and metabolomics to follow-up BP and BP change trend will be analyzed.
