Birth defects have become a serious problem affecting the quality of births, which compromises social and economic development in China. To accurately describe the regional differences in prevalence of major birth defects, environmental risks and underlying mechanisms, are the strategic needs on the prevention and intervention of birth defects. This project is based on the geographic information system platform and a multi-disciplinary methods including spatial statistical analysis techniques, epidemiology, biochemistry and others. We will collect the information of environmental exposure factors and the metabonomics by the established prospective cohort with birth defects (Neural Tube Defects, NTDs) in high- and low-prevalence areas, and analyze the associations between metabolite change and environmental risk through combining the datum of the natural environment, social environment and exposure levels of pollutants. Finally, we will investigate the pathways and mechanisms of the geographical environment factors, population exposure and metabolites changes to provide the basis for the development the early warning systems of high-risk population and risk assessment model. As the expansion of spatial analysis methods in the field of birth defects study, the project will establish a new method for studying mec
