Optimal utilization of urban road network to guarantee bus priority and convenient travel is not only the way to deal with traffic problem under the background of surging traffic demand and increasing traffic congestion, but also important for urban efficiency and social justice. To study this problem is theoretically and practically significant. This project particularly analyzes matching relations of road network structure and passenger structure (bus passengers and car passengers), based on interaction analysis of urban road network and urban spatial structure as well as regular public transport network. Then, the initially graded and hierarchical optimized ones of regular public transport network are utilized to redefine urban road network hierarchy. Furthermore, bi-level programming model for hierarchical road network collaborative optimization is established with the objective functions of each hierarchical level and the whole network. The upper model is overall optimization of arterials, central transfer stations, and branches, while the lower one describes bimodal traffic equilibrium model for bus and car. Finally, the urban road network optimization is completed by solving the model. All of the investigations come to hierarchical optimization method for road network under the guidance of bus priority. This study will provide new direction and new theories for urban road network planning to promote bus priority and improve traffic performance of road network.
