Nowadays, the increase of demand and the progressive decrease of resources are causing higher patients' waiting time in many chemotherapy oncology departments. Therefore, enhancing the quality of health services is needed so as to avoid claims and disappointments. To this end, reducing the patients' waiting times in the oncology units represents one of the main goals of any healthcare manager. Simulation models are considered an effective tool for identifying potential ways to improve the patient flow in an oncology unit. This paper presents a new agent-based simulation model properly designed to be configurable and adaptable to the needs of the oncology departments that have to interact with an external pharmacy. In these cases, a courier service is needed to deliver the therapies, collected in several batches, from the pharmacy to the oncology department. A real oncology unit was studied through the agent-based simulation and alternative scenarios were compared with the aim of selecting the ward configuration capable of reducing the patients' waiting time.
