Herbaceous Smilax [Smilax sect. Nemexia (Raf.) A. DC.] are annual understory herbs with a unique eastern Asia-western North America-eastern North America disjunct pattern (two, one and eight species in these three areas, respectively). The critical geographical distribution pattern (intercontinental and intracontinental disjunction) makes it an ideal model to test dynamic history of mid-Tertiary mesophytic forest flora in the north hemisphere and how it responds to environmental oscillation since then. This study will take herbaceous Smilax as a testing model, using cpDNA, ITS and RAD tags to study the speciation, lineage divergence, dynamic history of population geographic structure, and impulsive ecological factors, to reveal the cause of disjunction formation and evolutionary impetus of eastern Asian and North American flora since middle Tertiary. This study will provide new evidence for the floral exchange and variation history among eastern Asia and North America.
