Benthic epipelic algae is the important primary producer and its biomass, community composition play an important role in internal phosphorus cycle in shallow lake, but its distribution character and its impact factor are still not cleared. This project would be carried out in Lake Taihu, a large shallow eutrophic lakes, to investigate the spatial-temporal variation of biomass, community composition and photosynthesis characteristic of benthic epipelic algae and its relationship with environmental factors using chlorophyll fluorescence technique and routine method;the effects of the major ecological factors such as light and nutrients on phosphorus metabolism of benthic epipelic algae were also carried out in the laboratory simulation system; Meanwhile, effects and mechanisms of diurnal photosynthesis variation of periphytic algae on phosphorus loading were studed by utilizing isotope tracer techniques and microelectrode techniques . Combining field survey, anaysis on the effect of benthic epipelic algae on internal phosphorus retention capacity was carried out in Lake Taihu. the results of this project would not only enrich theories of ecophysiology of benthic algae and phosphorus biogeochemical processes in aquatic ecosystem, but also provide a theoretical basis for the treatment and management of large shallow eutrophic lakes.
