Widely used Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) protocols were initially designed for time-invariant additive white Gaussian noise channels, based on the commonly used performance measure: average packet error probability. In a time-varying wireless communication channel, especially in deep fades, both ARQ and its average packet error probability are not optimal. This project proposes ARQ with channel gain monitoring (ARQ-CGM) and the use of accepted packet error outage probability as a performance measure. We analyze and compare the accepted packet error outage probabilities of conventional ARQ protocols and those of ARQ-CGM via theoretical analysis, numerical computation and simulations. On top of that, we analyze the effects of channel estimation errors, forward error-correction code and error-detection code, and optimize the overall system performance. With the reseach of this project, we expect to generalize the outage probability performance analysis concept to commonly used average performance measures such as throughput, and construct an outage probability performance measure framework for time varing channels.
