Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are emerging new persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that are liable to accumulate in the environmental matrices. Moreover, PBDEs in the environment can degrade to other brominated derivatives through the debrominated reductive metabolism and the oxidative metabolism of hydroxylation and methoxylation. However, so far very few studies have dealt with transformation of PBDEs and their derivatives in terrestrial ecosystems. The aim of this research project is to investigate the transformation characteristic and mechanisms of PBDEs and their hydroxylated, methoxylated derivatives (OH-PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs) in plants. Research details include: 1) investigate occurrence and distribution of PBDEs, OH-PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs in plants from the e-waste area; 2) educidate the translocation and transformation characteristic of PBDEs, OH-PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs in plants through hydroponic experiment in laboratory; 3) use molecular-level radiocarbon analysis to discuss the origin of OH-PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs in plants; 4) use molecular biotechnology to elucidate the transformation mechanisms of PBDEs, OH-PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs in plants. The research of this proposal is of significance in elucidating the transformation characteristic and mechanisms of PBDEs and their hydroxylated, methoxylated deriv
