Depression is one of the most common mental disorders, who is characterized by persistent negative moods. However, the mechanism of depression remains unclear. Apparent cognitive and executive deficits in depressed patients have been reported. While the interaction of cognition and emotion has been ignored in the present investigations, which limits the further progress in psychology of depression, especially in the specified patterns of cognitive deficits and localization of the brain dysfunction. In this study, on the basis of the neuro-electrophysiological experiments, the interaction of cognition and emotion will be investigated, combining dynamic analysis and information theory on event-related EEG signals. The main body consists of three parts: (1) Design neuro-electrophysiological experiments with variable difficulty tasks in response to different emotional stimuli; (2) Dynamic analysis of individual cognitive processing in response to positive/neutral/negative emotions, focusing on their non-linear characterizations; (3) Develop methodology of information transfer during the cognitive processing, reflecting the directions of the information transfer. The study aims to explore the relationship of mental disorders and cognitive deficits, depict the topographic patterns of electrophysiological information transfer during emotional /cognitive processing and provide more mechanical evidence for depression. It will help both the basic and clinical researches including the study of emotion, the early diagnosis of depression, and the prediction of the recurrence and the estimation of remission.
