In the previous project, we specifically examined the brain plasticity inducted by speech motor learning in a short-term treatment. The present project will focus on the same key question as before, i.e., to examine brain plasticity in the speech motor system by using people who stutter. Specifically, (1) we will use a cross-sectional study to examine the potential of brain plasticity in different age and its association with speech production and perception ability. Three age range, i.e., 8-11, 14-18, and >18 will be selected based on previous evidence about both speech development and stuttering. (2) We will follow one of the group for two years so as to examine the long-term dynamic tract of brain plasticity. This project will be the first study that examines the brain plasticity of people who stutter, thus will provide important insight into both the neurophysiology of stuttering and the mechanism of brain plasticity in general.
