中文摘要: 我们通过研究视觉皮层对"二阶视觉刺激"的反应,证明了视觉皮层存在一种非线性(二阶)信息处理机制,其与更早发现的线性滤波(一阶)视觉机制有本质区别,而且二阶视觉机制的发生与视觉刺激的载波空间频率存在特殊关联。同行的研究还表明负责二阶视觉信息处理的神经通路更容易受到损伤。我们认为可以借助二阶视觉信息处理神经系统的敏感性和选择性,实现对视觉神经通路病变的早期检测。为了实现这一长远目标,本项目拟具体研究如下内容:(1)运用心理物理和脑电检测方法,研究视力正常成人的二阶视觉感知、脑电、二阶视觉刺激中载波空间频率三者之间的对应关系;(2)建立人的二阶视觉仿真模型和相关参数数据库;(3)以老年性黄斑退化为例,探索二阶视觉对视觉神经信息处理通路衰老的评估与检测方法。该研究在理论上可以推进我们更深入地理解人的二阶视觉机制及其脑电特征,从而帮助我们综合运用多种方法实现对人类视觉神经系统功能衰退的早期检测。

英文摘要: Our studies on visual cortices show that a nonlinear (second-order) mechanism underlies the neuronal responses to "second-order visual stimuli". Being distinct from the linear (first-order) mechanism found earlier, the second-order mechanism depends critically on the carrier spatial frequencies of second-order visual stimuli. Other studies suggest that the second-order visual processing system is more vulnerable to the neuronal degradation in the visual pathway. As such, we consider that it is possible to utilize the selectivity and sensitivity of second-order system to realize early diagnosis of neuronal degradation. To this end, we propose a three-step research program: (1) establish the relationship between EEG, visual psychophysics, and the carrier spatial frequencies of second-order visual stimuli; (2) build a computer-based simulator of human second-order visual processing and a database of relevant parameters; and (3) apply our findings in evaluating and detecting the early dysfunction of visual pathway caused by age-related macular degradation. We expect the project will help us advance our understanding of second-order visual processing in human visual system and the clinical application of second-order mechanisms and related measurement approaches.
