The event-based minimum mean square error (MMSE) state estimation problem for cyber-physical systems (CPS) is considered in this project. The system under consideration is assumed to be represented by a finite-state hidden Markov model. Utilizing the event-triggered measurement information available to the estimator, a systematic approach to optimal event-based estimator design will be investigated by considering the effect of the communication network (e.g., packet dropouts, time delays) as well as the existence of unknown exogenous inputs (e.g., cyber-attacks) in CPS, and the general analytical expressions of the optimal event-based MMSE estimates for the hidden process are to be expected. A general method for performance assessment of event-based state estimation will be proposed, and the quantitative relationship of the event-triggering conditions, the parameters in the communication network and the unknown exogenous inputs with average communication rates and estimation performance will be exploited. Based on the quantization effect of the analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters in sampled-data control systems, the finite-state equivalent model for sampled-data systems can be obtained, based on which the applicability and implementation of the potential finite-state event-based estimation results for general sampled-data control systems will be discussed. The potential results of this project provide theoretical and technical support for the development of CPS-based prediction and monitoring systems.
