Biological N2-fixation is the one of the most important marine new nitrogen sources, which plays significant role in marine N cycle and climate change. And many recent reports provided evidences which emphasize the status of biological N2-fixation in global marine systems and biogeochemical cycles. In this project, we choose two typical oligotrophic tropical areas in the East and West Pacific, respectively, for study. Diversity of diazotroph and their N2-fixation rate will be studied using molecular, ecological and geochemical methods. By doing so, we try to describe the community structure and size fractions of N2-fixation of diazotroph, reveal the distribution characteristics of diazotroph, compare differences between the East and West Pacific ocean, and estimate the contribution of marine biological N2-fixation to new production and new nitrogen input to the open sea systems. We believe that the results will not only improve the gene database of diazotrophs but also provide a better understand of global distribution of marine diazotrophs.
