Materials those can change in chemical composition or molecular configurations to an external stimulus, such as light, thermal, electric and chemical, and further lead to the change in wettability have shown great potential in application aspects. However, the utilization of those stimuli could alter the chemical and/or biological environment of the system to a certain extent, which restricts the uses in areas such as medical materials and drug delivery. In this project, PDMS micro-plate array with Fe3O4 microspheres embedded at the top of each micro-plate will be fabricated. To render the micro-plate with hydrophilicity on one side and hydrophobility on the other side by certain surface modification methods, “Janus” wettability of the micro-plate will be obtained. Upon the application of an external magnetic field, the micro-plate array will bent, and expose one side to the top. By changing the direction of the magnetic field, one can selectively control the bending direction; thereby, switching the surface wettability between hydrophilic and hydrophobic. On top of this, by controlling the bending angle of the micro-plate on the same side, the surface wettability will be consequently altered. Hence, a range of different wettability of the surface can be obtained. The advantages of adjusting the surface wettability via a magnetic field are repeatable, reversible, safe, and remote controllable, which could meet the pressing need of certain applications.
