Extracellular electron transfer of microorganisms is an important discovery in recent years in the field of environmental microbiology. Its performance is closely related to the geochemical cycles of multiple elements and the development of new bio-energy apparatuses. Parsing the remote electron transfer network on the level of microbial community is currently urgent for in-depth understanding of the principles of microbial electrochemistry. The applicant intends take the extracellular electron transfer network in the electroactive microbial aggregates as the core for study, making full use of advanced technologies in analytical chemistry, (spectro)electrochemistry, and molecular biology. Comprehensive descriptions on the spatial topology, molecular structure, and electrical activity of the electron transport network in the extracellular aggregates will be conducted. The biological function and action mechanism of remote electron transfer will be observed from the perspective of metabolic activity. The applicant will also analyze the essential difference between remote electron transfer and direct discharging on cell surface, and tried to establish remote conduction model for microbial aggregates based on the experimental results.
