Plant cuticle fossils have great significance to reveal plant epidermal characters. Biological studies on cuticles in detail assist plant identification, taxonomic and evolutionary researches, and the paleoecological understanding. There are few observations on the Devonian plant cuticles at present, especially in China. This project intends to focus on the Early-Middle Devonian plant cuticles (including dispersed cuticles) of Yunnan and Sichuan Province. According to morphological and anatomical studies, together with detailed comparisons, we will know more about the whole plant and establish a database about the cuticle characters of early land plants. Cuticle researches can provide phylogenetic analysis with new traits, improve the understanding of the morphological and anatomical features, and perfect the systematics and evolutionary system. Cuticles also operate on analyses of plant assemblages in the strata without magfossil. This project aims at reconstructing the Early-Middle Devonian atmospheric CO2 concentration inferred from plant cuticles as well, which is the comparison or complement of relative geochemical studies. And this project will explore the cluster analysis and principal component analysis methods to classify the late Paleozoic plant cuticles.
