The relationship between epigenetic alteration and adaptive tolerance to abiotic stress has been gaining unprecedented interest in the plant genetics community. We found previously in rice (Oryza sativa) that transgenerationally heritable epigenetic alterations were induced by heavy metal stress, and progenies of the stressed plants showed concomitant inheritance of the altered DNA methylation patterns and enhanced stress tolerance. This proposal is aimed to explore the possible intrinsic links between the two phenomena: inheritance of heavy metal-induced altered epigenetic marker and acquisition of enhanced tolerance to the heavy metal stress. This will be accomplished by identification of one or more functional genes that ply key roles in heavy metal detoxification and that will be regulated by epigenetic mechanisms. Results obtained from this study are expected to advance our understanding on the mechanistic basis of "acquired" heavy metal stress by progenies whose progenitors have experienced the stress, as well as provide useful reference for generating more heavy metal-tolerant (due to enhanced detoxification) crops cultivars.
