Inexpensive Cu(I) complexes as phosphorescent materials have exhibited remarkable electroluminescent (EL) performance with the external quantum efficiency comparable to those third-row noble Ir(III), Pt(II), and Os(II) complexes in our and other groups' previous research, so in this project we plan to design and synthesize novel chelating ligands and the corresponding di- and multinuclear Cu(I) complexes, and investigate their electroluminescent performances. These complexes should not only have more rigid structure than that of mononuclear Cu(I) ones, and more effectively inhibit the flattening distortion to decrease the probability of non-radiative decay due to vibrational relaxation in the MLCT excited state, but also increase the metal-ligand interaction upon the stronger coordination between Cu(I) ion and aromatic coordinate atoms. The final Cu(I) complexes will be expected to be the potential luminescent materials in the practical application.
