This study aims to reveal cross-sectionally instructional-driven (top-down) and stimulus-driven (bottom-up) information processing via measures of dichotic listening (the ability to recall two different acoustic stimuli presented simultaneously, one in the right ear and one in the left ear) using lexical tones in Mandarin-speaking children and adults. The developmental and progress normative data will be used to benchmark against which profiles of people with information-processing disabilities can be determined. We hypothesize that (1) The ability of children to freely recall stimuli presented to the left ear catches up with the right ear with age. This phenomenon reflects the maturation of the bottom-up stimulus-driven processing; (2) The dichotic listening performance can be affected by the presentation of temporal envelope, frequency resolution, and pitch contour of the Mandarin tonal signals; (3) The disability of adults to perform dichotic listening depends on the age-related higher cognitive deficits, such as memory, attention and etc. To validate these hypotheses, we will develop a battery of dichotic listening tests with normal hearing and normal cognitive subjects.
