As an old and ubiquitous system, both language and music are unique to the human society. Language, especially tone language, has a close relationship with music. The cross-domain transfer between tone language experience and musical training has been well documented. However, the question of whether lexical tone and music share common physiological and neural bases remains largely unsolved. In this project, we aim to use behavioral, event-related potential (ERP), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) methods to examine the physiological and neural bases of the production and perception of Cantonese tones and music, from the perspective of congenital amusia. Congenital amusia is a developmental disorder primarily in pitch processing. Chinese-speaking amusic individuals may also have disorders in lexical tone and intonation processing. Despite its importance, the physiological bases of amusia in the Chinese-speaking population remain unclear. So far, there are only a few ERP studies that have examined Mandarin-speaking amusic individuals. This project focuses on the Cantonese-speaking population. On the one hand, it will enable us to verify previous findings based on non-Chinese-speaking and Mandarin-speaking amusic individuals, in order to reveal the universal aspects of amusia, and to provide evidence for intervention for amusic individuals. On the other hand, it will allow us to examine the influence of different tones systems, especially complex ones, on the production and perception lexical tone and music. Examining the physiological and neural bases of production and perception disorder in amusia can shed important light on the relationship of language and music.
