In order to develop useful nanomaterials, DNA and DNA oligonuleotides have been used for controllable assembling of metal nanoparticles, such as copper, silver, and gold nanoparticles, into macroscopic structures. One important factor that affects the self-assembly of nanoparticles is the interaction between nanoparticles and DNA bases. Besides, the safety of self-assembled functional materials on biological systems has attracted special attention because of their potential applications in biology and medicine. Investigation on the interactions of copper, silver and gold with DNA bases is important for both development of self-assembled materials and understanding the safety of these materials on biological systems. We plan to generate copper, silver and gold clusters under high vacuum condition, to study the reactions of these clusters with DNA bases, and to study the structures and properties of the metal-base complexes using a variety of techniques, such as time-of-flight mass spectrometry, photodissociation, and photoelectron spectroscopy. We hope that will be helpful for understanding the interactions of these metal clusters with DNA bases and will provide valuable information for the development of self-assembled functional materials from both experimental and theoretical point of view.
