Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can form mycorrhizal symbioses with 80% of plant species in grasslands, and play critical roles in nitrogen and phosphorus acquisition for their host plants. AMF produce a large number of mycorrhizal networks, and form mycorrhizal symbioses with multiple plant species simultaneously. Mycorrhizal networks can interconnect multiple plant hosts and species, and lead to reallocation of nutrients among plants, influencing competition between plants. China is rich in grassland resources and livestock grazing is the major way of grassland resources utilization. However, the effect of defoliation by livestock on nutrient allocation in mycorrhizal networks of AMF at grazing steppe is still poorly understood. The present project will investigate the effects of selective defoliation, defoliation intensity, and defoliation of upper-layer plants on nutrient allocation of mycorrhizal networks using isotopic tracer method, and explore the relationships between nutrient allocation and the dynamic of plant community productivity and species diversity in native grassland. The results will contribute to the maintaining mechanism of plant community productivity and biodiversity, enrich the ecological theory basis of grazing and grassland management, and provide scientific support for grassland management.
