Tomato is an important vegetable crop and an excellent model for fruit developmental study. The appearance of tomato fruit including size and shape as well as smoothness is an important quality character. Due to genetic defects and suboptimal growth conditions, cracked and/or malformed tomato fruits are produced, causing yield and quality loss. In the past, great attention has been paid to dissection of the genetic and molecular basis underlying fruit size and shape in tomato. Little is known about the molecular mechanism underlying the regulation of fruit malformation. We identified a mutant from our EMS mutagenized tomato population, fasciated flower and fruit (faf), showing defective flower and fruit development. In this proposal, we plan to map-based clone the FAF gene and study its functions in fruit growth and development through multiple approaches, including phenotyping, histological analysis and gene expression. The results obtained from the project will further our understanding on the molecular mechanism underlying whereby FAF regulates fruit formation and provide strategies for improvement of tomato and other fruit-bearing crops.
