Grain chalkiness is a complex trait as affected by interaction between genotype and environment and controlled by multiple regulatory pathways. High occurrence of white-belly grains has been one of the main obstacles for japonica rice production in southern China. This study aims to elucidate the physiological and molecular foundation of white-belly formation, using a notched-belly mutant with high rate of white-belly grains and employing the combination of system biology approaches including transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. In particular, effect of both genotype and growth environment can be minimized by comparison between the chalky part and translucent part of grains of the mutant. The resulting genetic networks and regulatory pathways or factors related to white-belly should be of significance for both rice improvement and cultivation practices aiming for high quality rice with lower chalky grain rate, and of practical value for japonica rice production in southern China.
