Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been the most widely used nanomaterials in commercial products, and they are inevitably released into environment through different pathways. As a result, there is a growing concern about the environmental impact of released Ag nanoparticles, particularly their unintended impact on organisms and ecosystems. Sulfidation of AgNPs in aquatic environment is one of the most important environmental transformation. Studying the behaviors and mechanisms of sulfidation of AgNPs may lead us to understand more about their fate, bioavailability, and toxicity in the environment.. In this research project, sulfidation processes of AgNPs in complex aqueous environments are investigated by using a combination of spectroscopy and electron microscope measurements. We aim to disclose the impacts of physicochemical properties of AgNPs, such as particle size, morphology and coating materials, and environmentally relevant factors, such as sunlight, dissolved oxygen, ion species, ion strength, natural organic matter (NOM) and surface active agents, individually or in combination on the pathways of AgNPs chemical transformations. In aqueous solutions, we also study the mechanisms of how sulfidation processes of AgNPs affect their fate, and it also is of great significance to deeply assess the potential risk for ecological environment and human health.
