The N- and O-containing functional groups are introduced to surface of graphene by ion beam method. Compared with pure graphene and carbon nanotube with functional groups prepared by identical ion beam technique, the constitution of the functional groups on the graphene induced by ion beam is understood. The functionalization graphene displays the improved cell adhesion and growth, cell toxicity, platelet adhesion and aggregation, blood coagulation, hence the improved cell and blood compatibility. The identification of cell and protein as well the control of their conformation and adhesion and growth are obtained. The first-principles and biochemical theory were used to obtain the relationship between the functional groups' compositions, contents and chemical bonding states with the free energy, hydrophilicity, charge, and biocompatibility. Based on the chemical bonding state models, space groups and potential formed by the atoms of functional groups with protein molecules at the interface, their interaction is calculated and simulated to obtain the control mechanism of functional groups to cells and proteins. This study can provide a significant reference for the expanding the biomedical applications of graphene.
