With the development of digital voice recorders and cell phones, nowadays speech and conversation can be easily recorded as evidence. However, hearing cannot be believing since these audio recordings can be doctored very easily by pervasive audio editing software. A recorded audio may have some important words cropped or "synthesized" from other audio. It is necessary to passively check the integrity of digital audio. Exposing audio forgery can authenticate the diary recordings presented as evidence in criminal and civil court cases. Lots of key issues about digital audio forensics are not solved, such as detection of audio forgery. In this proposal, we will focus on tamper detection of digital audio recording. We will investigate the inherent properties of audio forgery and develop some effective detection methods. The research topics include cellphone recording forensics, post-processing detection and sophisticated forgery detection. The research results will be expected to support judicial departments on checking the integrity of audio recording.
