The crystal structure of a polymer affects greatly the macroscopic properties of the corresponding polymer materials. The molecular mechanism, kinetics and thermodynamics of polymer crystallization are important research areas of polymer physics. Understanding the mechanism of polymer crystallization and melting will facilitate the efficient control on those processes and lay a solid foundation for the crystal engineering and the design of high performance polymer materials. AFM-based single-molecule force spectroscopy has become one of the most efficient methods for the investigation of intra- and inter-molecular interactions at individual polymer chain level due to its high force sensitivity and high spatial resolution. In this project, on the basis of our previously established method, we intend to further investigate polymer crystallization and melting at the single-molecule level, including the effect of composition/structure of polymer chain on the stability of the single crystal and the crystallization process, the effect of end group on the conformation stability of the folded polymer chain within the single crystal, and the effect of different magnitude of external forces on the crystallization, to provide deeper insight into polymer crystallization and melting.
