Recently, the sorption-desorption of heavy metals or organic contaminants on graphene-based materials has been studied separately. However, sorption mechanisms and sorbed species of contaminants on graphene-based materials are unclear and lack of spectroscopic evidences. Furthermore, in natural environment, heavy metals and organic contaminants may coexist. Knowledge of single-solute system does not represent the real environmental system where multi-pollutants coexist. To date, little information is available regarding the effect of heavy metals on the sorption of organic contaminants onto graphene-based materials and vice versa. In this study, we study the effect of heavy metals on the sorption/desorption of organic contaminants on different graphene-based materials and vise versa using batch experiments, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray diffraction spectroscopic (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electroscopy microscopy (TEM) or X-ray absorption spectroscopic (XAS) technologies, etc. We hope to reveal the mutual sorption/desorption mechanisms of heavy metals and organic contaminants on graphene-based materials at molecular environmental science level.
