Hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) is one class of metamaterials with strong anisotropy, and it is a multi-functional platform to realized various kinds of novel optical effects, such as, waveguiding, imaging, sensing, quantum and thermal engineering beyond conventional devices. However, high loss, not easy to control, and band limited have limited the practical application of HMMs. Fortunately, the emergence of graphene provides a new avenue for implementing low loss, tunable, and broadband HMMs. This project will investigate the tunable optical properties (such as, transmission, reflectance and absorption, etc.) of the graphene HMMs constructed by the alternate layers of graphene and dielectric, reveal the tunable mechanism of all kinds of basic optical properties, provide the preparation method for tunable graphene HMMs in the near infrared and terahertz frequencies ranges, realize low loss and broadband HMMs, and explore the practical applications of graphene HMMs in controlling transmission, reflectance, perfect absorption, spatial filtering, and polarization control. We want to extend our graphene HMMs to other two-dimensional atomic crystal materials, design some new generation optical devices with super function, and offer a variety of new devices for the future optical communication and terahertz communication.
