Emotion is a complex psychophysiological experience and widely influences cognitive functions. Studies have found that emotional stimuli capture attention and hold it, but it is not clear how normal emotional state modulates attentional allocation. Eye movements are closely related to visual attention and provide a real-time measurement of behavoral output, therefore usually serve as a tool of studying visual attention mechanism. However, surprisingly few studies used eye movements to investigate the modulatory effects of emotional state in normal people. Therefore, the current project aims to investigate the modulatory effects of normal emotional state on visual attention via eye movements analyses during psychophysical experiments desinged to answer the following three questions: 1) How does emotional state (e.g. happy, sad, fearful, and neutral) modulate attention shift during visual search? 2) Whether and how emotional state modulates ability of attention redirecting? 3) How does emotional state modulate dynamic attentional allocation during attention shift? Selection of relevant eye movements parameters would help to understand the effects of emotional state on attentional allocation, and would provide efficient and economic experimental tool of investigating attentional mechanism in affetive disorders.
