Due to its superior oxygen storage property, cerium oxide has been usually used as a support for nano metal particles. To reduce the amount of used noble metals and improve their catalytic activity, bimetal nano-catalysis, especially catalysts with non-noble metal cores and with noble metal shells, has become a hot research topic. Generally, the most active sites lie in the interface between the nano metal particles and the supports, but which is relatively small. In addition, it is easy for the nano metal particles to aggregate at high temperature, which degrades the activity of the catalysts eventually. To solve these two problems, it is proposed in this project to design and prepare novel “active bimetal @ porous rare earth core-shell structured materials”, for which the cores (bimetal nanoparticles) are with special morphologies and sizes, for CO oxidation in vehicle exhaust. The effects of shell thickness and pore structures on the catalytic performance, the confinement effects of porous rare earth shells on the bimetallic nanoparticles and the synergetic effect between them will also be investigated.
