At seep sites, cold seep carbonates are well-known products of the microbial oxidation of methane discharges in marine sediments. Cold seep carbonates, as a striking indicator at cold seep systems, can supply information about the evolution of seep communities, fluid discharge, fluid sources and migration paths and tectonic-sedimentary controls of seepage over geologic time. Recent work on rare earth elements (REE) in cold seep carbonates showed some progress. Taken together, all the results suggested that the potential use of REE can provide additional constraints into not only fluid composition but also redox conditions in sediments during early diagenesis. In this study, REE in Pliocene cold seep carbonates from Chiasian, southern part of the Western Foothill, southern Taiwan, including concentrations, patterns and Ce&Eu anomalies, will be used to indicate source fluid characteristics and precipitation redox conditions. Factors controlling the REE distribution in cold seep carbonates will also be studied in order to shed new light on the ancient cold seeps research.
