Copolymers with sophisticated topologies are capable of microphase-separating into various hierarchical microstructures under certain conditions. Nanomaterials with hierarchical microstructures usually exhibit more advanced macroscopic properties than those with traditional microstructures such as lamellae, and therefore they may find promising applications in various fields. The results gained through the related studies may provide useful information to understand the nature of hierarchical microphase separation and to design high-performance functional materials. In this proposal, firstly a series of copolymers with various topologies will be designed and synthesized through molecular engineering and the structures of the samples will be characterized. Then, through combining the experimental observations and theoretical simulations, we intend to investigate the influences of the molecular topologies and intermolecular interactions on the hierarchical microphase separation, and unveil the underlying mechanisms. Finally, we will carry out studies on the mechanical properties of these materials with hierarchical microstructures. The effects of different microstructures will be examined to unveil the principle governing the mechanical properties. Through above investigations, we intend to fulfill the objective, i.e., to gain controllable microstructures and controllable properties through molecular design of copolymers.
