Organic bulk heterojunction (OBHJ) is a promising material system for organic electronic devices. Recently, researchers pay much attention to biosensing applications based on OBHJs. We firstly demonstrated an ultra-high-sensitivity phototransistor based OBHJ and applied it for non-invasive radial artery pulse wave monitoring. However, in most of these applications, OBHJs should be directly exposed to biological electrolyte solution, and it is still unclear how water dipole, ion and biological molecule in solution influence charge transport in OBHJs. In this work, we will design electrolyte-gated organic bulk heterojunction transistors and carry out charge modulation spectroscopy measurements to microscopically present a systematic study comparing hole and electron charge transports at the solid-liquid interface. Through modulating polarity and amplitude of gate voltage, we will in-situ study how the electrostatic coupling and electrochemical doping effect influences electron and hole transports in OBHJ. We will propose a method which combines frequency-domain charge modulation spectroscopy and polaronic relaxation model calculations to study how water dipole and ions influence the electron and hole polaronic relaxation process in OBHJs. Our research achievement will provide a significant theoretical guidance for designing new organic bioelectronics devices.
