Structural and functional hemispheric asymmetries in the brain are called brain lateralization, which have important significance in human evolution and development, but it is unclear what are the mechanisms of brain lateralization. With substantial progress made in brain imaging techniques, the present lateralization studies have focused on gradually the relationships between lateralizations of different cognitive functions associated with different brain regions. The present project, using behavioral and brain imaging techniques, will examine (1) whether there are identical direction of lateralization and correlation between Chinese language production and reading by combining characteristics of the Chinese language, and test the quick transmission account;(2) whether there are identical direction of lateralization and correlation among attentional sub-networks, and test the quick transmission account;(3)whether there are identical direction of lateralization and correlation between lateralization of Chinese language production and reading and attentional lateralization, on the basis of the findings of above (1) and (2),and test the quick transmission account and the crowding or causal relation account. This project will not only help to understand the relationships between Chinese language production and reading and attentional lateralization, but also to understand the mechanisms of lateralization of cerebral function and the scientific issue of organization of cerebral function.
