Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are a kind of mobile wireless communication network where the vehicles, as main nodes, communicate with each other in an ad-hoc way. A lot of information related to vehicles and/or environments can be sensed and delivered over VANETs with the aid of other technologies (e.g., sensor sensing and intelligent processing, etc.). Such kind of platforms enable a variety of promising applications (such as vehicle active safety, intelligent transport management, logistics management, city life services, emergency assistance, etc.) to be implemented. Considering that most VANET applications are event-based distributed systems in nature, this project plans to conduct the researches on event detection and dissemination over VANETs so as to provide novel insights, ideas and approaches to supporting event-based decisions. Facing with the challenges brought by time varying and stochastic characteristics in VANET communication and diversification and evolution in event streams, this project will focus on the following topics: real-time detecting the events with specified patterns and early capturing the outliers and association patterns from spatio-temporal event streams, disseminating events under different VANET scenarios, providing and optimizing quality of services of data delivery by cross-layer cooperation. Meanwhile, the project will build a platform for VANET simulation experiments by which the proposed technologies are evaluated and tested, and implement a VANET event service prototype to facilitate the development of VANET applications. The research results are expected to promote the development and popularity of VANETs and their applications.
