This workshop will take place at the SE 2018 conference in Ulm, Germany (06.03.2018)

The number of students continuously increases and presents ever greater challenges for instructors in software engineering. In courses with a huge number of students, it is particularly difficult to motivate students to actively participate. At the same time, practice-oriented and project-related training is becoming increasingly important, but project courses in cooperation with industry are often associated with high costs.

Digital teaching, online courses and new teaching concepts complement the curriculum. They offer a wide range of possibilities for modern and attractive teaching, but present instructors with methodical, technical and organizational challenges.

In this workshop, innovative teaching approaches in software engineering will be presented and discussed. The topic of the workshop is highly relevant for teaching at universities, colleges, and online, since courses can no longer be offered in high quality for large numbers of students without systematic approaches.

1st Deep Learning and Security Workshop will be co-located with the 39th IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy.

Over the past decade, machine learning methods have found their way into a large variety of computer security applications, including accurate spam detection, scalable discovery of new malware families, identifying malware download events in vast amounts of web traffic, detecting software exploits, blocking phishing web pages, and preventing fraudulent financial transactions, just to name a few.

At the same time, machine learning methods themselves have evolved. In particular, Deep Learning methods have recently demonstrated great improvements over more “traditional” learning approaches on a number of important tasks, including image and audio classification, natural language processing, machine translation, etc. Moreover, areas such as program induction and neural abstract machines have made it possible to generate and analyze programs in depth. It is therefore natural to ask how the success of these deep learning methods may be translated to advancing the state-of-the-art in security applications.

This workshop is aimed at academic and industrial researchers interested in the application of deep learning methods to computer security problems. Some of the key research questions of interest will include the following:
-What are the strengths and shortcomings of current learning methods for representing and/or detecting security threats?
-Can deep learning methods be successfully applied to security applications?
-Can deep learning help to develop more efficient malware analysis by building a more accurate representation of program behaviors?
-What are the challenges involved, and will the use of deep learning methods significantly improve over previous results?
-Can deep learning methods better cope with problems related to learning in adversarial environments?
-What are the big, open problems in threat representation, especially for the detection of malicious software?
-How can generative models improve our understanding and detection of threats?

Extreme communication environments such as underwater, aerial, underground, and intra-body have been attracting growing interest from both academia and industry in an effort to conquer the last wireless communication frontiers. Novel wireless communication architectures and networking protocols for extreme communication environments enable a rich body of applications with unprecedented societal impact. The workshop will focus on communication, networking, and system-level developments related to underwater, aerial, underground, and intra-body environments, as well as on contributions towards the characterization and modeling of the different mediums based on real-world data measurements.

The goal of the workshop is to unveil the latest wireless technology developments, from the physical layer all the way to the application layer in realizing underwater, aerial, underground, and intra-body communication networks with a focus on bridging the gaps between theory, algorithms, and practical system implementations. The workshop will bring together academic and industrial researchers to identify and discuss technical challenges and recent results related to underwater, aerial, underground, and intra-body extreme communication environments.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
-Energy efficient protocols and routing techniques
-Cognitive networking
-Cooperative communications
-Cross-medium protocol designs
-Secure physical layer communication schemes
