Previous studies indicate that convective clouds are very important in transporting pollutants vertically: Deep convective clouds can transport pollutants out of the boundary layer and to the upper troposphere; Shallow convective clouds can not only enhance the vertical mixing of pollutants in the boundary layer, but also transport pollutants to the outside of the boundary layer through the cumulus venting or cumulus pumping effect. This project investigates the vertical transport of pollutants by shallow cumulus clouds. The focus is to elucidate the physical and chemical mechanisms of the vertical transport, including the transport of pollutants from the surface upward to the heights above the boundary layer and the transport of pollutants from outside of the boundary layer downward to the inside of the boundary layer by shallow cumulus clouds. This project uses a cloud resolving model (large eddy simulation model coupled with droplet bin microphysical scheme) to study the cloud dynamical structure, the microphysical and chemical processes, the interactions between microphysics and dynamics, and the scavenging of aerosols and soluble trace gases by cloud particles. Results from this study can be used to understand the mechanisms of vertical transport of pollutants by convective clouds. This can help to model an
