The nonlinear Internal Solitary Waves (ISWs) in the northeastern South China Sea (SCS) are often generated by the interactions of tides and topography. The ISWs play an important role in the regional physical oceanography such as energy transport and vertical mixing of the ocean, and seafloor interfacial process such as sediment transport and resuspension, and the formation of submarine microtopography . The northeastern SCS have been the frontier and key area in the study of ISWs during the recent years. This project is going to systematically study the ISWs in the northeastern SCS by seismic oceanography, using seismic reflection data, multibeam data and thermohaline data. The project is to give a preliminary conclusion of the fine structure of ISWs through the analysis of high resolution seismic reflection profiles. Study the evolution of ISWs during the shoaling process by analyzing the ISWs with different water depth and different submarine geomorphology. Study the resuspension of sediment by comparing seismic reflection data with true amplitude and data of physical oceanography, and discuss the roles of the internal waves in the marine sediment transport and the formation of submarine microtopography with the multibeam terrain data.
